Enter the world of those travelers who not only undertake the journey, but also write about it for us to enjoy. From the famed ancient travel writer Herodotus who traveled to Asia Minor, Babylon, and Egypt before settling in Athens and ending his days in Southern Italy, to the modern writers of today such as Paul Theroux  people have been fascinated by the written travel account.

As the wise philosopher, St. Augustine of Hippo said, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page" and so we endeavor to bring to those armchair travelers whose notebooks contain mostly blank pages,  the online adventures, impressions and thoughts of their fellow travelers.

In a world dominated by sound bites and instant photos you get the big picture, but to really know about something you  have to read the fine print.  And while a photo might be worth a thousand words, how much better to have a caption! So welcome all those who love to read or write about far away places and places not so far away- come along!

CLASSIC TRAVELER'S TALES

In each issue we are pleased to present a classic traveler's tale from the past.  In honor of Christopher Columbus we are presenting this first classic travelers tale centered on his first contact with the natives of the New World.

There is now a great deal of speculation that Christopher Columbus was NOT an Italian, but rather a Spaniard from the Catalan region around Barcelona, possibly the illegitimate son of a noble family.  One telling fact: he never in his life spoke or wrote in Italian!  After much study from his letters it has been determined that his mother tongue was Spanish.  I don't know what the Italians will have to say about this!

TRAVEL BOOK REVIEW

The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country in the World, by Roz Hopkins (Editor).

Whether you are looking for something for yourself or a fellow travelnaut, this is just the book to give yourself, or them, for Christmas.  Billing itself as "A "Journey Through Every Country in the World" it does lead you through 230 countries, and in wonderful detail, with best times to visit, tours, cuisine, essentail experiences, etc.along with fabulous color photos.

This is a Lonely Planet production, and their philosophy was "to present a Lonely Planet view of the world...showing a slice of life in every single country."  They do not intend this book to be a reference book, and what they are really trying to do is present the cultural essence of each country. In this they have succeeded, but the mundune details have superseded their vision to a certain extent.

Because the book covers the entire world (!) there are going to be some people not happy with certain entries, or information. " You can please some  of the people some of the time, but not all of the people, all of the time" to paraphrase a saying.  Despite the lofty goals of Lonely Planet, this book can indeed serve as reference guide,  with an excellent overview of  world tourism and attractions that can be used by teachers, students, armchair travelers, or just as a wonderful way to decide where to go for your next trip.
